On March 18th, 2022, World Sleep Day® is celebrated, a day (and event) that was first created by a group of healthcare providers and members of the medical community who studied sleep. It’s hosted by the World Sleep Society (WSS), a nonprofit organization based in the US.
Sleep subjects are pointed out as being increasingly important in a society that lives at such a fast pace, paying little attention to rest and sleep due to its 24/7 flow.
The discussion that takes place during the annual World Sleep Day© event amongst professionals from this field aims to reduce the burden of sleep problems in society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders.
Raising awareness about the benefits of sleep is increasingly relevant and that’s why this occasion is celebrated on a global scale. More important than sleep itself, is to promote healthy sleep and to remind us of all about the human privilege that is often compromised by the habits of modern life, as is mentioned on their website.
Mental health – the 2022 challenge
Every year, the event changes its theme and slogan according to the intention for promotion. For 2022, the slogan is Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World. The challenges and consequences of the global pandemic are not to be ignored. Mental health was (and still is) one of the main topics to be discussed and is strongly linked to sleep quality.
Did you know that sleep and mental health are closely connected? Those with mental health problems are more likely to have insomnia or other sleep disorders. Chronic sleep problems affect 50% to 80% of patients in a typical psychiatric practice, and they are particularly common in patients with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as mentioned here.
How does quality sleep help maintain mental health? - is one of the questions addressed by World Sleep Day this year. Others include - How might better sleep help people focus during the day? - or - How might fatigue weigh us down physically, mentally, and emotionally?
All focusing on the importance of quality sleep and raising awareness for the fact that sleep is a foundational pillar of human health. Within this context and under this slogan, the organization challenges those who want to take part in this initiative to voluntarily plan and organize a day activity in their local community. Over 200 activities were organized by volunteers worldwide for World Sleep Day 2021 and published on their website.
Keep an eye on what it is already being done for 2022 here, and stand for healthy sleep. Ergomotion® will take part in the initiative following its mission to take sleep to the next level. Will you join us?
